“You can’t do that” or “Stay in your lane” or “Why are you trying to do that?” are words of caution from well meaning people. These words of warning are said to help people to play it safe and do nothing that will hurt themselves, or at least that is how the cautious person may explain it. But are they seeing the whole picture? GOD gave every human a special gift that only they can do. Each person is made different, yet in HIS image. HE was excited to make “that” person and said “It is good” when HE completed him or her. As he or she grows up, the world says, “You can’t do that” enough that the gifted person does not believe she can do it. That is where the thankfulness exercise enters the picture. Be Thankful for Your Talents In a previous article, “Where the vision for my business comes from”, I stated that the vision for the business comes from GOD. HE is aware of the gifts and talents HE has given each person and wants them put to use. The first step in developing the vision for your business is to truly listen to GOD regarding what you are talented in. Being Trained versus Being Gifted Seeing what someone else can do can raise up envy in me. I then try to mimic what the gifted person is doing, leaving my gifts to pursue theirs. I may even take classes to learn how to be like someone else. GOD simply wants me to be me. HE wants me to love the gifts and talents HE has given me. There is, however, no problem with getting trained to acquire a human talent. Just realize, the more time you spend learning someone else's talent, the less time you use yours. Avoid Marginalizing Yourself Affirmation seems to have become a goal, but does it help? When GOD said, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” Matthew 6:26 (NIV), HE was making an attempt to say “You are very valuable and important to ME.” Seeking human affirmation can cause the gifted person to abandon their gift to seek “likes”, “praise” and “awards” from those in power. I know, because I have tried and received many. But was it worth it? At that time I thought so, but I was receiving praise for expected behavior rather than using my gifts for GOD. You have no idea where the person in power is coming from if they marginalize your ideas and talents. Your talent may cause him to see something in himself that needs to be resolved with GOD. He may not be ready to resolve whatever he is going through, or she may not have a relationship with the LORD. That is not for you to determine, only GOD knows. You are gifted by GOD, so be thankful. Talents Need Exercise By increasing thankfulness, GOD opens your eyes to hidden talents you have never seen. Just like exercising a muscle, talents need to be exercised. The exercise of thanksgiving develops muscles of praise which GOD sees and hears when it is genuine. HE then can trust you to be stretched in ways you could never imagine. The marginalized talents of faith, hope, charity and love, need to be exercised regularly so HE can trust you with HIS flock. As you grow stronger, other muscles develop. Peace, patience, kindness are few overlooked muscles GOD loves and can use. What are your talents you can give to GOD in your business? Next I will discuss identifying the target audience.
